About Ms. Chen

Sylvia Chen is a Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teacher who is passionate about creating children’s books that reflect the nuances of Asian culture, as well as bilingual storybooks that promote a love of multilingual reading. Often struggling to find appropriate reading material that resonates with her upbringing, Sylvia is inspired by the rich yet understated ways in which love and care are communicated in Asian households.

Although there is a rise of Asian American authors in literature, she believes that there are still many facets of life that could be shared through picture books. Sylvia is currently working on producing bilingual books that cater to non-native Chinese learners, aiming to provide resources that are relevant to her students’ lives and encourage a broader audience to appreciate and embrace the beauty of multilingualism and cultural diversity.
